Lisa Mergen’s studio at the time I photographed it was located in the Arcade downtown between the 200 blocks of North 4th and 5th Streets, respectively. Not too long afterwards, she moved her working space to her home in Bellevue. Here’s how she describes her very cool art on her website: “My line of wearable art begins with white silks and velvets. Multiple layers of dye are applied until the desired colors are achieved. Various dyeing techniques are used from stretching the fabric on frames, to vat, binding, resist and discharge. Over the years I have learned that the end result is rarely predictable due to the multi-step process involved.” Color was the operative word when I visited, seeming even more spirited against the white walls of her old space.
